Hello

Hello from the other side!  Sorry I haven't posted in a while.  The photo below is my excuse. :)
It was a great visit!  But vacation is over now and I'm back in the saddle again.  I'm thankful I get to live in a beautiful place like Oaxaca, and super thankful my family comes to visit me here now and again. :)

"Feed my sheep"

We began our lesson with some of the leaders in the time of the judges of Israel.  I was surprised by how much these kids already knew.  From a woman driving a peg into the head of Barak during the time of Israel to the Philistines gauging out Samson's eyes, they already know quite a bit - though, admittedly, it was the boys who remembered the more gory details.

One of the objectives of this Sunday School lesson was to reflect on people who had guided us in our lives.  Like the judges guiding Israel back to God, who in our lives had helped us know what God wants of us?  As we came to the end of our time, I handed out little papers and asked the kids to make a list of these people.

The response was less than enthusiastic.  I gave them a few more prompts, and finally everyone began to write.  I asked if anyone would like to share and was met with silence.  Trying a different tactic, I asked them to just say one name on their list.  It was like pulling teeth, but they all took a turn.

Wanting to wrap things up, I went ahead and closed us in prayer.  I told the kids that they would each get the chance to pray for a person they wrote down.  I prayed for my person, someone who had inspired a heart for missions in me, and then told the boy beside me, "Ok, you can say your person."

I had just planned on them saying the names and finishing up, but the first one prayed a very nice prayer for the person he had mentioned earlier.  Then the second one did the same, and the next one and the next.  I was a little concerned that this was going to take much longer than they had patience for, but each child prayed in turn, giving thanks for a variety of people in their lives, from the director of the home to the mechanic.

Kids enthusiastically calling out the answers, eagerly raising their hands to read the Bible verse, listening wide-eyed as I tell the story, saying precious prayers - it's what brings joy to my heart and reminds me why I signed up for this in the first place. :)

Special Guests

It's a little hectic as we mix the batter for the cookies.  Six boys want to help, but the littlest one just wants to color in the living room.  We make it through figuring out what a full measuring cup actually looks like and how to not crack eggs by squeezing them until they burst.  Thanks to my sister's shared Netflix account, and internet that is actually working for the moment, we watch a kids movie on TV as we wait for the cookies to bake.

I have invited the little boys' house over for the afternoon, mainly hoping to give the substitute houseparent a semblance of a break, since he hasn't had a day off in a while.  I am beginning to realize now that I am basically babysitting seven little boys.  Considering that, things are going very well.

While the boys watch the movie, I toss some popcorn in the microwave.  They seem not to notice the sounds of it popping and being poured into bowls for them.  I begin to pass the bowls to them with a napkin below each one - a wordless suggestion that they shouldn't wipe greasy fingers on the furniture.  And something astonishing happens.

As I hand a bowl to the boy nearest me, he hands it to the boy next to him, who in turn hands it to the boy next to him.  They go on this way until everyone has gotten popcorn, and I am reminded of what good kids we have here.  There are hard days, days when we see the depths of what still needs to heal in them, when they make bad decisions and end up harming themselves or others.  But there are also moments like these that are so sweet.

Since all but one of the boys helped me make the cookies, I ask the youngest child to come help me in the kitchen.  As he goes by the tray of cookies ready to go into the oven, he sticks his finger in one.  I scold him a bit, but then instruct him in what he will be doing - give two cookies to each boy.  He hands out the cookies with diligence.  When he finishes his duty, he sees that there are two cookies left on the place.  He turns to me and asks if those are for him.  Yes, they are yours, I say with a smile.

Later I send them off to find their housefather, with a bag of cookies to share later.  He texts me to say thank you, and I respond that it was a pleasure.  It truly was.
